Biology
1st period-Full Year

Curriculum: Apologia Exploring Creation with Biology, 2nd Edition
Summary: This class provides a strong background in scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, dissection, and ecosystems. It also provides a complete survey of the five kingdoms in Creation. This class does not contain a discussion of human anatomy and physiology. Dissection is included in the class. Science roots to accompany the course will be taught.
Homework: Extensive, to include daily reading with questions, chapter review questions, tests and lab reports.
Supplies Needed: Apologia Exploring Creation with Biology, 2nd edition (ISBN 978-1-932012) text, Solutions and Test manual. The Companion CD-ROM is recommended, but not required.

Chemistry
1st period-Full Year
Instructor: Chris Ratcliff
Curriculum: Apologia Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 2nd Edition
Summary: This class is considered a first-year high school chemistry course. It gives the student a rigorous foundation in chemistry, in order to prepare him or her for a college-level course. The course covers significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, and equilibrium.
Math Prerequisite: This class requires the ability to manipulate equations. Students need to be strong in this area to be successful in this class. Students must have successfully completed Algebra I prior to taking this class.
Homework: Extensive, to include daily reading and questions, chapter review questions, tests, and lab reports.

Physical World
1st period-Full Year
Instructor: Barb Weaver
Curriculum: BJU Physical Science, 4th edition
Summary: Covers the scientific method, measuring, introductory chemistry, and introductory physics. This course lays the groundwork for upper-level laboratory courses. Note to parents: Please remember the instructor is with your child one hour each week. If you are uncomfortable working on science at home with your child, please consider purchasing the teacher manuals to go with the material. We cannot copy answers and distribute them to parents as this is against copyright laws.
Prerequisite: Students must have completed pre-algebra and be currently taking Algebra I.
Homework: Extensive, to include daily reading, answering questions, completing lab write ups and completion of tests about every 2 weeks.

Curriculum: Picturing America
Summary: We will explore American Art History using "Picturing America". We will study a different picture each week then describe, analyze and interpret the piece. We will also explore literary connections to the piece.

Summary: Each month the class will focus on a different author, writing style, genre, or time period. Students will be reading and responding to different works and styles in the form of writing, discussion, and individual & group presentations.

Safety
2nd period-Spring Only

Curriculum: We will be using Boy Scout Merit badge booklets and various internet resources
Summary: This class will satisfy the ½ credit of safety required for high school. We will use numerous resources. Homework will include weekly reading and answering questions. Class work will involve discussion, role playing, lecture, and projects. Students will be required to participate in a semester end class project of a CHASE Safety Fair. Topics covered include: Fire safety, food safety, weather safety, emergency preparedness, internet safety, first aid, car safety, personal safety.

Summary: An inspiring look at the blessings we enjoy and the symbols we hold dear as American citizens. A fascinating study of the constitution, the government it established, and the rights and privileges it guarantees the American people. Optional trip to Washington, DC.

Economics

Curriculum: Abeka Economics
Summary: Emphasis is on free enterprise capitalism in a free market economy. The Biblical views of work, wealth, and stewardship appear throughout the text. It will help students to understand the proper economic rules of individual producers and consumers as well as that of the government from a conservative Christian perspective.
Homework: Extensive to include reading, questions, and an investment project.

General Music
3rd period-Full Year

Summary: This a general music education class for students who need to fulfill their music credit before graduation. Especially helpful if your student does not already have musical knowledge or play an instrument, but still fun if they do. We will use Meet the Composers I & II in class, as well as learn basic notation, scales, and rhythm through a variety of games, rounds, and puzzles.

Health
3rd period-Full Year
Instructor: Lisa Brown
Curriculum: Gray's Anatomy Coloring Book; ISBN 9780762409440, by Fred Stark; available from Rainbow resource for $7.75
Summary: This class will meet the goal of providing credit needed for diploma. In class we will discover all the systems of the body. We will cover systems when they are “well” and cover illnesses of each system. There is no text book to read, handouts will be provided for students to read on various topics and the above coloring book will be utilized to learn the anatomy of the systems. This class will cover male and female reproduction and diseases of this system including STD’s. There will be one research project.
Homework: Will be moderate to extensive, but not daily. We will have in-class tests on systems so memorization of anatomy will be necessary. There will be weekly assignments such as creating pamphlets on disease or questions to answer. There will be some websites that will be reviewed at home for supplemental learning opportunities.
Supplies Needed:Above text, colored pencils, recommend at least a 24 pack of colors or above; 1 inch ,3 ring binder for handouts; lined notebook paper for note taking during class time.
Note: siblings taking the class may purchase one coloring book and make copies if they wish of assigned work.

Digital Photography
4th period-Fall Only
Instructor: Julie Phipps
Curriculum: The Textbook of Digital Photography (more info at www.photocourse.com)
Summary: Course will cover history of photography, digital cameras and images, digital workflow, controlling exposure, sharpness, light and color, understanding lenses, on-camera flash photography, studio photography, and display of printed and on-screen photos. Students will be expected to have printed versions of their projects: either using a photo-quality printer OR preferably using a photo lab (i.e.-CVS, Walmart, Shutterfly, etc.)
Homework: Moderate. Textbook reading, weekly projects with camera and computer

Curriculum: How to Write Successfully in HS & College, Editor in Chief
Summary: HS Writing will cover compositions, term papers, essay and even SAT essays. We will do grammar with the Editor in Chief book. This will cover the grammar requirement. Our writing will cover the English requirement. Students are responsible to ensure they have all assignments and notes given in class in case of an absence.

Curriculum: I'm Just Here for More Food by Alton Brown ISBN #1-58479-341-4
Summary: Student will learn various mixing methods which will give them the knowledge to make countless dishes from any recipe source. Designed to give the 'why' behind the disconnected directions of most recipes, this course will offer something for the novice as well as the experienced baker. Book is optional but recommended as it will provide a wealth of information we won't have time to cover in class.

Summary: Monologues,,,dialogues…improv…this class will be about trying out and learning different acting skills. This is NOT a structured class that will end in a production. It is just a chance to get comfortable in front of others, a chance to learn a variety of acting styles, and have lots of fun in a non-threatening environment.

Physical Education
5th period-Fall & Spring
Instructor: Donald Freeman
Curriculum: NA
Summary: 10/40/10-10 minute warm-up before every class, 40 minutes of activity (basketball, football, soccer, dodge ball, etc.), 10 minutes of cool down and clean up time. Activities will vary depending on weather, indoor/outdoor activity, etc. We will do as much outdoor activity as possible. This class will do different things during the fall and spring semesters. We have divided it up so that students could sign up for just one semester or for the whole year.
Homework: Minimal, usually only needed when students volunteer to lead a sport.
Supplies Needed: Each student should bring a soccer ball when asked (usually 3 classes in the fall) SNEAKERS MUST BE WORN TO CLASS, ANY STUDENT NOT WEARING SNEAKERS TO CLASS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE.

Wilderness Survival Skills

Summary: This class will teach a variety wilderness survival techniques such as rope tying, treating water, edible plants, etc. through hands on activities, games, videos, discussions, etc. There will be some homework. This will be a fun class but student participation will be required.
